Seikei Education and Research Center for Sustainable Development

Seikei Gakuen opened the Seikei Education and Research Center for Sustainable Development (ESD Center) in April 2018. ESD Center is promoting educations for sustainable development (ESD) through collaboration between the schools of Seikei Gakuen (elementary school, junior high school, senior high school, and university).
The ESD Resource Center of Japan has certified Seikei Gakuen as a hub of ESD activity in the Musashino area, Tokyo. In addition, we participate in the Associated Schools project Network in Japan and the world. We would like to have many contributions to achievement/realization of the "Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)" in collaboration with various organizations, educational institutions, and local governments.

ESD in Seikei Gakuen

Education for Sustainable Development means including key sustainable development issues into teaching and learning. It also requires participatory teaching and learning methods that motivate and empower learners to change their behaviour and take action for sustainable development.Seikei Gakuen, as represented by its nearly 100 years of history of weather observation, has continued to provide experiential learning through experiments, observations, and field trips as the origin of Seikei Education. In addition to weather observation, Seikei Gakuen has been practicing education that is linked to the ESD philosophy since its foundation, such as the elementary school's cultivation activities of "sowing seeds, growing, harvesting, cooking, and eating", the nature observation education program at the junior high school "summer school" and the high school’s drosophila genetic experiments. By establishing the ESD Center, which connects all the schools, we "visualize" these educational practices and share them. We also disseminate information about related activities to both inside and outside Seikei Gakuen.

Seikei Gakuen as a UNESCO School

UNESCO Schools are schools that practice peace and international cooperation to realize the principles of UNESCO described in the UNESCO Charter. In order to promote ESD in Japan, UNESCO schools are positioned as regional bases by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and the National Commission for UNESCO in Japan. Seikei Gakuen was certified as a UNESCO School in November 2019. In addition, Seikei University has been a member of the Interuniversity Network Supporting the UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network (ASPUnivNet) since December 2018. Seikei Gakuen is a rare case in the world as a UNESCO school which promotes UNESCO school activities by a school corporation from elementary school to university.
